Man with knee tumor

This photograph was published in 1876 in the "Dublin Journal of Medical Sciences." The cause of the man's giant knee tumor wasn't identified. Syphilis is one likely possibility, but so were tuberculosis and a variety of cancers. Mirrors were commonly used in medical photographs, not only as an artistic prop but also so that tumors and other conditions could be shown from other angles.
