Police said Johnson shot a 41-year-old former coworker with a .45-caliber pistol at about 9 a.m. Friday on the Fifth Avenue side of the building. The victim's name has not been released.
Johnson was killed by police. Mayor Michael Bloomberg said some of the nine wounded may have been caught in the confrontation.
Police said Johnson had been laid off about a year ago from Hazan Imports, where he had worked as a designer of women's accessories.
Johnson and the coworker he allegedly shot were the only two killed in Friday's attack, police said. Those injured are expected to recover.
A fire department spokesman says they received a call about the shooting just after at 9 a.m. and that emergency units were on the scene within minutes.
