Beer banned in 'Bama over "dirty" name

(CBS/AP) BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - You won't be buying Dirty Bastard beer anytime soon in Alabama.

The state alcoholic beverage control agency said Thursday it is banning the brew because of profanity on its label.

The beer-maker, Michigan-based Founders Brewing Co., can appeal the decision.

Somewhat curiously, Alabama does permit the purchase of wine sold under the name "Fat Bastard." Beverage control agency attorney Bob Martin says the brand was approved years ago, and he doesn't know the circumstances.

A few years ago, the state gained attention for banning a brand of wine that featured a nude nymph on its label. This latest decision to nix the beer name that almost rhymes with "custard" is opposed by Free The Hops, an Alabama group that advocates for new brew brands (say that three times fast!)
