(CBS) CHICAGO - A man was carjacked at gunpoint, shot three times, and dumped in the trunk of his car, before he managed to escape and get help, Chicago police said.

CBS Chicago says the 24-year-old man was hospitalized and initially reported in serious condition Tuesday morning after the attack.

The Chicago Tribune reports that the victim, who wore a Pepsi company uniform, was able to speak with police despite his condition.

The man said he was carjacked by four men in ski-masks around 9:30 p.m. Monday. He was shot three times in the chest, but police don't know if that happened as he was entering or exiting his car.

The victim was then stuffed in his own trunk and driven away. However, at an intersection less than two miles away, he managed to climb out of the trunk.

Authorities believe the man's attackers were not even aware he had escaped.

The vehicle was later found on fire in a garage. Police Tuesday morning had not located the carjacker-kidnappers and didn't have a description of them.
