Report: Vikings Offer Favre Significant Raise

According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the Vikings have put together a compensation package that would give Brett Favre $20 million to play this season - a significant raise from the $13 million he already was scheduled to make, reports CBSSports.com's Josh Katzowitz.

Apparently, $16 million would be guaranteed and the other $4 million would come in the form of incentives.

Though Minnesota coach Brad Childress pled ignorance during his Tuesday news conference, Judd Zulgad writes "Vikings tight end Visanthe Shiancoe admitted Favre had 'told a couple of guys on the team that he was going to retire,' but the Biloxi (Miss.) Sun Herald reported an unnamed person close to Favre's family said he hadn't made a decision whether to play a second season with the Vikings."

Even with Favre's history of flip-flopping, the revelations came as a surprise to most surrounding the Vikings. They reported to training camp last week confident that after they wrapped things up in Mankato on Aug. 12, Favre would join them in the Twin Cities just as he did last season.

But Favre's messages to teammates turned things upside down.

Childress said after the morning practice that he had not been directly contacted by Favre and called the 40-year-old quarterback's status with the team "fluid." Childress has shown a great deal of patience with Favre, saying he would not set a deadline for a decision and allowing him to skip training camp for a second straight year.
