Chicago Fugitive Caught after Crime Spree

Authorities have captured an escaped prisoner in West Chicago, after he overpowered two law enforcement officers, carjacked two drivers and robbed the bank in his daylong crime spree, reports CBS station WBBM in Chicago.

The U.S. Marshal's office confirmed that Robert Maday, 39, was captured in West Chicago, the station reports.

West Chicago police saw a car that matched the description of a Volkswagen Jetta Maday had carjacked earlier. There was a short pursuit that ended in a crash at Route 59 and James Avenue, WBBM reported.

The Jetta hit a light pole and ended up wrecked in a grove of trees.

Maday complained of back pain after the crash, and was being attended to by paramedics while in custody as of 12:24 p.m.

A few hours earlier, Maday committed an armed robbery of a First American Bank, the station reported.

FBI agent Paul Block said Friday morning that during the robbery, Maday identified himself as the man who had been on the news the day before. He had robbed the same bank previously.

Before that, Maday carjacked a vehicle on Hassell Road in the northwest suburb sometime around 7 a.m. Friday. Police said he approached a female dental assistant who was pulling into work and forced her out of her car at gunpoint, WBBM reported.

The dental assistant first saw him sitting on the curb wearing blue jeans, a green T-shirt, and a white baseball cap with black writing on it. She later identified him as Maday from photos.

The dental assistant wasn't hurt, but was shaken up, WBBM reported. Her car was the Jetta that Maday later crashed.
